‘PROACTIVE’ SUPPORT EYED FOR FARMERS, FISHERS OF AKLAN AFFECTED BY BORACAY CLOSURE

Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol assures farmers and fisherfolk of Aklan that the agency will provide proactive support to those who will be affected by the six-month closure of Boracay Island in Malay.

“I have to admit that I was one of those who pushed for the closure of Boracay. But before the problem sets in, I would like to have solutions already. I want to hear out your concerns and the subsidies you need,” Piñol said. 

During a forum held on April 12 in Kalibo, Piñol requested Vice Governor Reynaldo M. Quimpo to convene and discuss with the agri stakeholders in Aklan on the possible impact of the island closure to their agri-fishery livelihood.

GREEN HARVEST INCORPORATED ADVANCES WITH ACEF SUPPORT

The Philippines’ agriculture department is mandated to use the Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (ACEF) to finance projects and activities that will help agricultural and fisheries sectors become globally-competitive, viable, efficient and sustainable.

Julie Delima, regional coordinator, said that ACEF offers interest-and-collateral free loans through Land Bank of the Philippines as the credit conduit.

One of the ACEF-assisted agri-based enterprises in Western Visayas is the Green Harvest (GH) Foods Incorporated. Formerly named Green Harvest Industries, it started its operations in 1993 under the Countryside Barangay Business Enterprise (CBBE) Republic 6210. For 24 years, it continues to be one of the leading producers and distributors of kaong, nata de coco and pickles in the province and all throughout Panay Island.

The Big Fortune Farm (BFF) is located at Sitio Tambobohon, Brgy. Maabay in Sibunag , Guimaras. The six (6) hectare integrated farm is owned and managed by Mr. Ramon P. Marañon who worked for 15 fruitful years as a researcher of the Bureau of Plant Industry.

Farming and technology was acquired and learned through his 15 years of experience in the Bureau of Plant Industry. He was at the same time a scholar of DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development back then.

In 2003, Ramon opted for early retirement in the government and decided to work in Qatar, Saudi Arabia where he managed an integrated and green house farm of a sheik. Endowed with green thumb, Ramon learned the secrets in cultivating exotic plants from Asia and Europe from his work abroad. Ten years after, he started his integrated, organic farm in Guimaras which focuses more on Calamansi production.

AGRI, LIVESTOCK EXPO SEEKS TO LEVEL UP FARMERS’ TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION IN WV

The first Iloilo Agriculture and Livestock Expo opened on March 22 aims to provide Ilonggo farmers and fisherfolk with the current production technologies, new marketing concepts and best practices for the local products to compete globally.

“We need to equip our farmers, fisherfolk, processors and livestock raisers on how to market, process and to ensure that their products can compete with our neighbors in South East Asia,” said Iloilo City mayor Jose Espinosa III during the opening of the expo at Iloilo Convention Center in Mandurriao.

Rhea Christina Resol, senior agriculturist of the Department of Agriculture (DA) 6, stressed that there is a need to improve agri facilities to ensure competitiveness of agricultural and fishery products in Western Visayas.
