CORN FARMERS, IMPLEMENTERS TRAIN ON BANTAY PESTE BRIGADE

The Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) of Department of Agriculture (DA) 6 gathered corn farmers, local farm technicians and agricultural extension workers (AEW) of Iloilo province in a Bantay Peste Brigade (BPB) Training in Corn Cluster Area on May 22 to 23 in Iloilo City.
“Since pests and diseases are the major causes of low yields in corn, we need to establish the BPB to the farmers and implementers to update them about crop protection, damage symptoms and management strategies in major pests and diseases of corn,” said Ryan V. Rasgo, Chief of RCPC.
He added that the training will also help farmers in identifying useful organisms in corn ecosystem and prepare action plan for municipal pest surveillance or monitoring system for the preparation and submission of monthly pest monitoring reports.
BPB is a community-based pest monitoring and management system where farmers serve as pest scouts who can make decisions on how to manage pests in their corn fields.
The AEWs who completed the Corn IPM Season- Long Training of Trainers will guide the farmers in monitoring their corn fields.
